A couple great images. Via Link Banana.
Hilarious article in the Times, about a rivalry in men’s figure skating. Can’t make this up:
Via Boing Boing. Dustin Carter made it all the way to State. How does one even pin someone without arms or legs? Video of Carter wrastlin’.
DG superfriend Zack Soto pointed me towards this photo set of bow and arrow warfare in Kenya. It’s amazing how the tribes people seem to exist in two moments in time; one where bows and arrows are still a way of life and another where swatch watches and Abercrombie gear gets worn to the battlefield. Check out the link at the end of the post to the poor guy who got one in the face, or click here. Warning, graphic.
All the pics of bare-chested dudes on the site has not gone unnoticed by us. And now, from DG love-interest Nicole comes this story of the “Brady Bro-mance” held around the country:
To kick off the super weekend–Super Bowl, Super Tuesday, et al–DG faves Moistworks have posted some super songs to get you through the weekend, from the Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl Shuffle to Prince to my own superfunky soft spot, Black Heat.
I basically never use the blog to trumpet the stuff I write elsewhere, but I saw this sculpture by Ryan Johnson, titled “A Firm Handshake” and thought it would be perfect to illustrate this comment I made on the NY Times’s football blog. Subject: Why did Belichick cheat, and what is going on in that big-ass Croat head of his?
So a sprinter that uses artificial legs was just ruled ineligible to run in the Olympics. The hangup: A normal foot is 60% efficient, but the runner’s artificial legs are 90% efficient—meaning that running at any given speed takes 25% less energy.
Not to get all William Gibson on you, but here’s my point…
Occasionally in Brooklyn or the Bronx, you see great clouds of pigeons turning in the sky. They’re often trained by fanciers that keep enormous coops on their roofs. The Times has a great story up about the dying sport of pigeon racing.
Which reminds me of a curious fact: Mike Tyson grew up “rolling” pigeons and has remained crazy for them; when he was a kid, he actually beat down a bully that decapitated one of his flock, which began his series of legal problems. USA Today had a moving story about his love, published a couple years ago.
And don’t forget about this amazing book about pigeon breeds, which is better than 95% of the art books out there. Image by Bird in the Hand via Flickr Creative Commons.
